Informant — это: 1. кто-либо, дающий информацию; 2. в более узком значении — это специалист, обладающий информацией в какой-либо области науки или культуры. An informer — это человек, который доносит на другого, т. е. доносчик, стукач. Это слово носит отрицательный оттенок.
